The Slopes of 8 project is not an ordinary cooperative. While even larger associations of farmers can result in immense improvements for each individual concerning increased incomes, equal pay and the power of co-decision, these eight farmers profit from their project in an even bigger sense.
About three years ago, eight farmers on neighboring hills in Kirinyaga region in central Kenia, decided to join forces. While farmers in larger cooperatives usually bring their beans to a central washing station and do not take part in any further processing, these eight farmers are responsible for their product until its selling. Since there are no fees for procession or marketing, the farmers share of profit is bigger than in larger cooperatives. At the same time, these eight farmers have more control over their products and the terms of selling. As a part of a very small project, every individual additionally gets more credit for its work, which in turn serves as a source of motivation for steadily improving quality.
